'Light It Up Blue' is a global campaign to recognise World Autism Awareness Month. The campaign highlights the pressing need for greater public education and awareness of autism in our community. Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person's lifetime. People with ASD have problems with social and communication skills. Many people withASD also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to sensations. It is part of a group of disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
At Glenwood High School we have a large group of students with ASD in the support unit and the mainstream classes. A lot of the students with ASD are often misunderstood due to their differences. We celebrate Autism Awareness Month by hosting a huge blue bake sale and a raffle that includes over 20 prizes. The money raised goes to funding new projects, equipment and awareness in the Support Unit. We use this time to encourage all our students to have an open and honest dialogue about disability and ways we can effectively create inclusion for all student and people living with special needs in our community.
