High potential and gifted education
Glenwood High School is an educational institution which maintains high expectations for learning, providing a supportive environment in which students have every opportunity to excel. The HPGE team, comprising of teachers from all faculties, aims to provide relevant and engaging learning opportunities to students, while supporting activities which identify and celebrate ability in a wide range of learning areas.
Targeted students and groups in the classroom setting explore alternate and extension tasks which aim to challenge their learning, while extra-curricular activities build upon the talent students have displayed through engagement with their coursework. Our teachers understand that students displaying above-average potential and performance may exist in all classrooms and provide opportunities for the delivery of best practice in High Potential and Gifted Education.
Our participation in high potential and gifted education conferences and workshops has ensured that Glenwood High School remains at the forefront of contemporary pedagogical practice, developed through thorough research and trialling in schools.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Classes
Glenwood High School operates two specialised High Potential and Gifted Education classes: one in Year 7 and Year 8. Admission into the Year 7 class is through the successful completion of an internal assessment. When students transition into Year 8, high-performing students from across the grade are provided with the opportunity to enter the High Potential and Gifted Education class, based on their final results across all subjects.
Students must complete a range of aptitude tests akin to NAPLAN to be selected for the Year 7 High Potential and Gifted Education class. Students will do a literacy examination of both reading and writing, a numeracy exam and a problem-solving activity. The high achievers will be invited to join the Year 7, HPGE class for the following year, late in Term 4. For Year 8, the top 30 students will be selected using academic data from different subjects in Year 7.
Activities
Student participation in extra-curricular activities, including debating workshops and tournaments, academic competitions across a wide range of subjects, sporting challenges, creative and performing arts initiatives and other High Potential and Gifted Education initiatives allow for students to engage in activities which interest and challenge them.
The High Potential and Gifted Education program at Glenwood High School aims to celebrate ability in a wide range of learning areas, thereby catering for the diverse needs and interests of our students.
