High potential and gifted education

Glenwood High School is an educational institution which maintains high expectations for learning, providing a supportive environment in which students have every opportunity to excel. The HPGE team, comprising of teachers from all faculties, aims to provide relevant and engaging learning opportunities to students, while supporting activities which identify and celebrate ability in a wide range of learning areas.

Targeted students and groups in the classroom setting explore alternate and extension tasks which aim to challenge their learning, while extra-curricular activities build upon the talent students have displayed through engagement with their coursework. Our teachers understand that students displaying above-average potential and performance may exist in all classrooms and provide opportunities for the delivery of best practice in High Potential and Gifted Education.

Our participation in high potential and gifted education conferences and workshops has ensured that Glenwood High School remains at the forefront of contemporary pedagogical practice, developed through thorough research and trialling in schools.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Classes

Glenwood High School operates a specialised High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) class for students in Years 7 and 8.

Students are selected for the Year 7 HPGE class through a range of aptitude assessments similar to NAPLAN. These include reading, writing and numeracy examinations, as well as a problem-solving activity. High-achieving students are invited late in Term 3 to join the Year 7 HPGE class for the following year.

When students transition into Year 8, high-performing students whose results exceed the expected achievement benchmark may be offered a place in the HPGE class based on their overall academic performance and commitment to learning throughout Year 7. Placement into HPGE classes in Years 9 and 10 is determined by individual results across each core subject.

Student performance is regularly reviewed and monitored throughout the year to ensure placements remain appropriate and to identify students who may benefit from entry into, or movement from, HPGE classes.

Activities

Student participation in extra-curricular activities, including debating workshops and tournaments, academic competitions across a wide range of subjects, sporting challenges, creative and performing arts initiatives and other High Potential and Gifted Education initiatives allow for students to engage in activities which interest and challenge them.

The High Potential and Gifted Education program at Glenwood High School aims to celebrate ability in a wide range of learning areas, thereby catering for the diverse needs and interests of our students.
