Careers

Careers gives students the opportunity to reflect on their interests/goals and explore various career options. This exploration will enable students to gain an understanding of the many different career opportunities available to them and create a personalised Career Pathway. This process will highlight the various study requirements necessary and assist with subject selection for Year 11 so students can achieve their goals.

As part of the Careers Education Course, students will have the opportunity to participate in a Work Experience Program. This program runs for one week and is an integral part of the Careers Education Course at this school. The aim is for students to gain first-hand experience in the workforce of their chosen area.

Careers Education provides students through the Senior Years with information regarding post-school options including Apprenticeships, Traineeships, University Admission, TAFE and other tertiary education. Students will also gain insight into available courses, open days and workshops available to the students.

Our students have been involved in many programs through Careers including: The Young Women’s Leadership, UNSW Engineering Camp, NAB Inspirations Workshops, Glenwood Apprentice, Productivity Boot Camp, Careers Insight Days, Taste Of Trades, Career Expo, Community Mentoring, IMPACT, and Work Skills Program.

Work Experience

In Year 10, our students have the opportunity to complete a block of work experience. Some choose to do one block, and others may choose to experience several careers throughout the year. There are a diverse range of work opportunities throughout Sydney, and many employers host students either during Year 10 or in senior school for Work placement in vocational subjects.

This year there have been Glenwood students working in a range of different industries. They include kitchen design, restaurants, hairdressing, beauty therapy, early childhood, veterinary surgeries, dental surgeries, retail stores, mechanical and motorbike workshops, electrical. Other willing hosts have been the National Rugby League promotions office, Featherdale Wildlife Park, The NSW Art Gallery, Channel 7, The Today Show on Channel 9, Richmond RAAF base, The NSW Fire Brigade, Taronga Zoo, our local primary schools and several Hospitals.

Doing work experience also helps students choose if they would like to do a TAFE or Vocational training course in Year 11 and 12. These courses provides training in certain fields, so that when leaving school after Year 12, some students will also have a Certificate II or III qualification.

White Card

At Glenwood High School the students have the opportunity to gain their White Card. A White Card is required in order to work on a building site in NSW, QLD, SA, VIC and shows that you have received the necessary training in safe work place practices. A White Card is evidence that you have completed a General Construction Induction course/White Card course This course is mandatory for anyone who works or wants to work in the construction industry.

Courses are run at school twice a year.

Vocational education and training

Glenwood High School successfully implements a range of Vocational Education and Training courses. These courses include but are not limited to:

Hospitality - cafe skills
Information, digital media and technology

All staff delivering the course are nationally recognised facilitators, who through their dedication and support allow the students at Glenwood High School to gain meaningful "real world" experiences both at the school and through work placement. Many students who have completed their VET courses at Glenwood High School have continued to apply their skills through employment in cafes, restaurants, hospitals, accountancy firms, software design companies ad at university.

VET in schools allow Year 11 and 12 students to:

Develop industry specific skills which can contribute towards their ATAR
Gain nationally recognised VET qualifications and units of competency while still completing their Higher School Certificate
Develop employment skills
Gain an understanding of the world or work, providing them with valuable experience to assist with planning and pursuing their career pathways.

TAFE delivered vocational education and training

TAFE-delivered vocational education and training (TVET) courses allow school students to gain workplace skills and experience to get a head-start on their career.

TVET allows you to:

Gain practical, work-related skills to enhance your future employment opportunities.
Complete units that count towards your Higher School Certificate (HSC)
Start or complete a nationally-recognised TAFE NSW qualification while still at school.

When you finish your TVET course you'll receive a nationally-accredited Certificate qualification or a Statement of Attainment. Most TVET courses articulate into further TAFE or university studies. More information can be found at the TVET Website

School based apprenticeships and traineeships

School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT's) are more than just part-time jobs - they're a great way to set yourself up for the career you want whilst you are completing your HSC. School based apprenticeships and traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students in NSW. They allow students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school. A School based apprenticeship or traineeship combines paid work, training and school; and as well as an industry recognised national qualification you will gain credit towards the HSC. Some apprenticeships and traineeships can contribute towards the ATAR.
