Congratulations to the Class of 2018. We are extremely proud of you all. It was gratifying to see that 74 students were acknowledged for their hard work and effort on the Distinguished Achievers List, of which 44 have been placed on the Honour Roll. Data collected to date indicates that 13 students achieved an ATAR surpassing 90, with more to come. A phenomenal effort! Congratulations to Nicky who achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.75. Just as impressive is Lesi on 99.35, Keziah on 98.75 and Lauren with 97.50.

2018 Maths Competition

Glenwood High School has been running Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) every year since 2005. It is run by University of Canberra at the beginning of Term 3 where students from not just Australia-wide but also from more than 30 countries attempt the same problem. Students from year 7 to 12 are asked to solve 30 problems in 75 minutes. The problems are designed to test mathematical thinking and become more difficult through the competition, thus challenging even the most gifted students.

Mr Prasad, a passionate Mathematics teacher, has been co-ordinating this event every year. His countless hours of organisation and promotion of this event had resulted in 189 Glenwood students participating in the competition this year, the highest number school has seen so far. The result has been very pleasing with 75 students receiving Credit, 23 Distinctions and one year nine student receiving a High Distinction - Zane Brackley

Australian author William Kostakis visited Glenwood High School on Tuesday 14th August. His presentation was engaging and humourous as he spoke about how he became an author. His appealing way of captivating the audience kept them enthralled the entire time he was telling his story and they clearly enjoyed his presentation. Will also involved the audience in his story and the paths it took, which provided the audience an opportunity to interact with him on an equal footing. Glenwood High School definitely appreciated his visit.

During exams we have a number of students who require additional support through the use of a volunteer reader and/or writer. For this reason, we are seeking volunteers for the Higher School Certificate Exams 2018.

The reasons for this support may vary, but it enables students to access exam papers with the same level of fairness as other students. Exams are designed to test a student’s knowledge of the course content, and provisions are put in place to ensure that they are not being excessively disadvantaged, nor penalised due to other issues.

The date for the HSC Exams are from Thursday 18^th October to Friday 9^th November 2018 and are held at Glenwood High School.

The only skills necessary to assist our students in this way are:

· Literacy and numeracy skills

· Must not have a child or guardian attending the school in the same year

The dates and times needed are as follows:

Thursday 18^th October - 10:20am – 12:30pm English Standard paper 1

Friday 19^th October - 9:25am – 11:30am English Standard paper 2

Tuesday 23^rd October - 9:25am -12:30pm Ancient History

Friday 26^th October - 9:25am – 12:30pm Senior Science

Monday 29^th October - 1:55pm – 4:00pm Society and Culture

You are invited to attend the Year 9, 2018 Subject Selection Information Evening. This evening is being held to provide you and your child with all the information that they need to make informed choices regarding their future studies at Glenwood High School.

Dear Parents and Carers,

NSW School Vaccination Program

for Year 7, 8, 10 & 11 students in 2018

The last vaccination clinic for 2018 will be conducted at Glenwood High School on Friday 31^st August 2018.

All Year 7 students will have their 2^nd dose HPV, plus any Year 7 student who missed having their 1^st dose of HPV and any Year 7 student who missed having a single dose dTpa
Any Year 8 student who missed their 2^nd dose of HPV at the last clinic
Any Year 10 & 11 students who missed their Meningoccal ACWY from the last clinic in June 2018.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phone the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

Please note that students who commence the HPV vaccination in school clinics in Year 7 but do not complete the course during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8. Students who have their first HPV dose at their GP will be advised to complete the course with their GP.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. You should ensure that this record is kept for future reference. Please do not assume that your child has been vaccinated if you do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

Could you please make sure your child has a decent breakfast on vaccination day, and brings plenty of food and water for throughout the day.

Premier's ANZAC Memorial Scholarship

Glenwood High School has been successful in securing a place for one student, currently in Year 9 or Year 10, to receive the Premier's ANZAC Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship will see the chosen candidate undertake a tour of the Western Front in France and Belgium, visiting significant sites in Australia's military history. Details of the tour are still being finalised, although, it is expected to last for 13 days, taking place in June and July of 2018.

The scholarship includes international airfares, transfers and coach travel, accommodation, meals, official clothing and travel insurance. However, it should be noted, the cost of applying for a passport will not be covered by the scholarship.

To be considered for the scholarship, students need to submit a piece on one of the themes listed on the attached letter, as well as complete the application form attached. A short-list will then be compiled, and students interviewed by a panel of school and community representatives. Further details can be obtained from the attached documents, Mark Batten or by visiting the attached website

EFTPOS at the front office, you will receive your EFTPOS receipt at time of payment.
The itemised receipt can be collected by your child during recess or lunchtime.

HSC Trial Exam Announcement

Attention HSC Chemistry and Senior Science Students and Carers

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the 2U Chemistry and 2U Senior Science trial examinations have been postponed until Monday 1^st August 2016 starting at 9.00 am . All Chemistry and Senior Science students have been informed today at school and written confirmation will be available at the examination centre from tomorrow morning .

As a result normal classes for Year 12 students will resume on Tuesday 2^nd August 2016. TAFE students must attend their TVet classes as normal on Monday 1^st August 2016.

You're invited to participate in the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey designed for parents and carers. This survey complements the TTFM student and teacher surveys, which focus on student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices. All Department of Education schools have the opportunity to participate if they choose.

Why should I participate?

Parents and carers are an important and valued part of the school community. Schools can use survey feedback to make practical improvements and inform school planning.

What does it involve?

This online survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. It is anonymous and voluntary.

On Friday, 14^thMarch, 2014, Glenwood High School will once again celebrate Harmony Day. We are hoping the day will be an exciting and enjoyable opportunity to celebrate the wonderful diversity of students and families at the school.

A number of activities have been organised for the day which will help to educate the students about the different cultures in our school, as well as to create a fun, harmonious and enjoyable day for all.

There will be a multicultural food fair of cuisines for the students to purchase that will take place during an extended lunch in the afternoon. Money raised will help to pay for events run on Harmony Day, as well as to support other diversity programs during the year.

Year 10 Careers Education Course

Dear Parents/ Caregivers,

In Year 10 students undertake a Careers Education Course, where every fortnight students will have a Career lesson. In these lessons students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their interests/goals and explore various career options. This exploration will enable students to gain an understanding of the many different career opportunities available to them and create a personalised Career Pathway. This process will highlight the various study requirements necessary and assist with subject selection for year 11 so they can achieve their goals.

As part of the Careers Education Course students will have the opportunity to participate in a Work Experience Program. This program is run over two weeks; 24^th – 28^th November, 2014 and the 1^st – 5^th December, 2014. Students are encouraged to organise two different work experiences to gain the most out of this time. It is mandatory for students to attend work experience or school. Students are to organise work experience for the first week initially (24^th – 28^th November, 2014) and then if a second experience is required they will have the option of organising a second week (1^st – 5^th December, 2014).

Work Experience is an integral part of the Careers Education Course at this school. The aim is for students to gain first hand experience in the workforce of their chosen area.

The following is a list of steps required for the organisation of Work Experience.

Please discuss with your student their preference for a Work Experience placement.
Your student (not parents) will be required to organise his or her own Work Experience placement. It is preferred (but not mandatory) that the student does not work for or with your family, as the aim is to broaden their experience and knowledge.
Students are to obtain a Student Placement Form; this form must be filled in and signed by the student, employer and parent. Once this form has been filled in the students must hand in the form to the Careers Adviser. The Career Adviser will access the suitability of appointment and approve the placement.
Students must have their Work Experience placements organised and handed into the Careers Advisers by the end of lunchtime on Thursday 18^th September 2014.Late forms cannot be accepted due to time required to finalise organisation with the school, employers, students and parents.
Permission will not be given to any student to enter onto a building site without prior successful completion of an Occupation and Safety Course and an award of a White Card (previously called a "Green Card"). The cost is approximately $110 and involves attending a course for one whole school day with a private provider. From time to time, the school will run this course.
Students are to attend each day of the placement for the whole working day of the industry that they are experiencing (not school hours) and to comply with the rules and regulations of that industry. Travelling to and from work should be by the usual method of transport for employees with the cost of fares and incidental expenses such as the laundering of uniforms, met by the student.
A teacher will make an "on the job" visit to each student from this school wherever possible, otherwise a call to check on progress will be made to assess the suitability of the job and the progress being made.
The employer will not pay a wage during the time of placement as payment for the work raises legal complications and in reality the employer is taking on the student in the capacity of a learner or volunteer.
The employer is covered in terms of insurance by the Department of Education. In the event of an accident or injury, the student must receive the appropriate medical treatment and the school must be contacted as soon as practical with the details.
REMEMBER TO CONSULT THE CAREERS ADVISERS FOR HELP OF ANY KIND.The Careers Advisers will not know of your problems or difficulties if you do not inform her and may not be able to help if queries are left to the last minute.

New Medical Forms Policy

During Terms 3 and 4 the Department of Education and Communities is introducing a new medical recording system. All schools are required to update their medical records to ensure they have the most up-to-date information on your child's health.

The new forms help us collect your child's important medical information, and the introduction of new systems will mean we will be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child.

These forms have already been sent to the parents of students that have indicated to us that they have a health/medical condition noted on our files. If you did not receive a letter and medical form for completion and your child does have a health/medical condition, could you please complete the attached Medical Form and forward to the front office. Please ensure that you attach a current Action Plan signed by your child's doctor if your child's medical condition is of a high risk nature.

When completing these forms we ask that you take care to answer every question, be accurate and write legibly.

If your child has an allergy condition there are eleven (11) questions, if your child has other medical conditions there are seven (7) questions. If your child's condition relates to allergy and other medical conditions, all questions must be answered in full. A current action plan signed by your child's doctor must be attached, if required.

Please complete and return these forms no later than 9 August 2013

We are pleased to invite students to attend Glenwood High School's 9th annual Cross Country carnival.
The second sporting event of the year will be held at Forman Ave, Glenwood and promises to be an exciting day... for everyone involved.

Due to our high number of student enrolments, we have decided to continue with our ‘Competitors Only' format. This means that only those students, who register for events, will be permitted to attend the carnival. The carnival will involve supervised, structured races only. Students who do not register to compete at the cross country carnival will attend normal classes at school.

All students are required to wear the school sports uniform to the venue. Students will need to get changed at the start of lunch and then quickly head over to Forman Ave.

Due to time restraints, the length of the course will approximately be 3km for all age groups.

DATE OF CARNIVAL:
•Tuesday 2nd April, 2013. Periods 5 + 6 Only
•VENUE: Forman Ave, Glenwood
•TRANSPORT: Walk
•COST: Nil

Hi my name is Daniel Arona, and I have recently been appointed in the role of Welfare Worker at Glenwood High School.

I am 20 years of age. I was born in New Zealand and have a Cook Island background. I have been in Australia for 11 years. Before working here I was working with Marist Youth Care in residential homes. My role there was to mentor and be a good influence to the young people that live there. I have been working with young people since I finished high school in 2009. I have qualifications in Cert4 Youth Work.

I am really excited in working at Glenwood and can't wait till next year.

Year 7, 2013 Information

Orientation Day will be held on Wednesday, 5th December 2012 from 9:00am - 3:00pm in the School auditorium.

On this day you will meet teaching staff, hear about programs that will be offered to students in 2013, and be provided with information about the Year 7 camp.
Students will be able to tour the school and have the opportunity to make some new friends and meet their year 10 mentors.
Students will be given a taste of high school life with lessons in Science, English, Industrial Arts, IT, Music, PE, LOTE, History and Home Economics.
Morning Tea & Lunch will be provided by the SRC.
Transport packages will be available.
Parents will be able to pay the general contribution and subject fees. Cash Register closes at 2:15pm.
The Uniform shop will be operating and a variety of uniform sizes will be available for fitting and ordering purposes.

PLEASE NOTE:

- Parents are invited to attend the initial assembly (9:00am - 10:00am)

- Students to wear their Primary school uniform

- Parents are responsible for the transport arrangements for their child.

- Do not park in the staff or Childcare Centre car parks.

- Uniform shop will be open from 3:00pm-5:00pm ONLY on this day. (Please refer to website for normal opening hours).

NAIDOC Week - Monday 30th July Performance in Hall

On Monday, 30^th July, 2012, students at Glenwood will be celebrating NAIDOC week, a national celebration, which recognises the culture and achievements of indigenous Australians. Year 7 students will attend a concert performed by an indigenous musical group and then participate in workshops run by the performers.

A gold coin contribution is required to go towards the cost of these activities. This will be collected during Connect on Monday morning.

We expect the day's activities will be a very rewarding and enriching experience for the students, and an excellent opportunity to celebrate and learn about Indigenous culture.

BRIDGE to understanding: Australian and Indonesian schools open their doors

Glenwood High School is one of 80 schools around Australia embarking on a groundbreaking intercultural understanding project aimed at building a permanent bridge between our two cultures.

The online BRIDGE project - Building Relationships through Intercultural Dialogue and Growing Engagement – currently involves 324 teachers from 154 schools, and connects thousands of Indonesian and Australian students.

The BRIDGE Project was the only Australian entry shortlisted in the final 20 projects in the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations – BMW Award for Intercultural Innovation 2011, ranking 16th out of 400 entries across 70 nations. A testament to the ground breaking work schools are undertaking through BRIDGE.

From May 21st to June 1^st, Glenwood High School will be hosting two Indonesian teachers from its partner school, MTsPB Roudlotul Mubtadiin, an Islamic Boarding School located in a village near the coastal town of Jepara, in central northern Java.

"School education needs to equip our young people to resolve global issues and in particular, breakdown stereotypes," Erla McMaster said today. "To do this we need to work with our closest neighbours, speak each other's languages, understand our similarities and differences. BRIDGE aims to go beyond the classroom into communities and families, developing long-lasting connections."

The BRIDGE teachers represent a broad range of communities including remote and disadvantaged schools in Indonesia, rural and city schools across Australia, and religious and government schools in both countries. A number of the Indonesian schools are part of the Australian Government's Basic Education Program, funded through the Australia-Indonesia education partnership.

Other participating Australian schools report many positive outcomes from their involvement in the BRIDGE. These include higher Australian student participation in language education and better performance.

Executive Director of the Asia Education Foundation, Ms Kathe Kirby, says BRIDGE builds professional and personal relationships through social media and intercultural understanding professional learning. It opens the door to two neighbours getting to know one another.

The BRIDGE Project helps create a better understanding of Indonesia in Australian school communities through positive engagement.

Initiated by the Australia-Indonesia Institute and Asia Education Foundation, the schools partnership project is funded by The Myer Foundation and the Australian Government, through AusAID. The Asia Education Foundation is delivering the program with Australian Education International and Kang GURU Indonesia.

The Wizard of Oz Musical - 20-22 June 2012

Our exciting production of the Wizard of Oz is fast approaching. The students have been working very hard on Sundays, after school and during Wednesday sport to make sure that Wizard of Oz will eclipse the success of last year's musical Fame.

Staring Emily Matthews and Tyler Norman as Dorothy, Brandon Lacey as TinMan, Daniel Wong as the Lion and the very comical Stefano Geranio as the Scarecrow, the production will transport you into the very "Magical Land of Oz".

The performance nights are Wednesday 20th, Thursday 21st, Friday 22nd June 2012 commencing at 7:30pm.

Tickets will be on sale during lunchtime in the art/dance/music area.

$10.00 Adult

$25.00 Family (2 Adults and 2 Children)

Tickets will be also available at the door each night.

Woolworths Earn & Learn

From Wednesday 9th May, simply collect your card and stickers at the checkout of your local Woolworths supermarket (self-service too) to place on your child's sticker card. There'll be one sticker for eve...ry $10 spent, excluding purchases of liquor, smoking/tobacco products and gift cards. Once completed, simply drop the sticker card into a collection box in our office.

Points earned will go towards purchasing Mathematics and English resources, Science equipment, arts and craft materials etc from Modern Teaching Aids.

Year 9, 10 and 11 Parent Survey on Laptops

We seek your views on the NSW one-to-one laptop program.

A formal evaluation of the program is being undertaken by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training in collaboration with the University of Wollongong. It is an effort to determine how the DER-NSW program may impact on learning and teaching education across the state. The evaluation has taken place over 3 years.
